“Take one part Rock ‘N’ Roll High School, one part Thin Lizzy, one part Cheap Trick and one part T.Rex. Mix in a shot of the youthful exuberance of The Exploding Hearts. Add a dash, now just a dash, of cheese-metal guitar riffs. We don’t want too much cheese metal. And we’re close to all the ground the Chicago band Mickey covers in their debut album, Rock ‘N’ Roll Dreamer, an album of teenage party-rock that stubbornly refuses to conform to three chords, three kegs, and three days with the parents away. Songs like, “Dance,” and “My Lady” take the sexy swagger of a Marc Bolan boogie and inject it with the speed and enthusiasm of punk rock. While numbers like “She’s So Crazy” and “For You” are their inverse — Starting with a framework of The Ramones and filling in the details with glam’s big guitar lines and seductive shimmy. As long as Mickey keep things relatively simple Rock ‘N’ Roll Dreamer is thoroughly entertaining. It’s when they try to cram too many of their Rock ‘N’ Roll heroes into too tight of a space that they begin trip themselves up. “Kids Crazy in Love” suffers an identity crisis when a perfectly fine take on the trash-rock of the New York Dolls gets interrupted with power guitars, a disjointed chorus, and pounding instrumental passages from who knows where that fit neither the verse nor the chorus. “For You,” has a similar penchant for quick changes and could use similar streamlining. While “Scream With Me” never quite makes up its mind between pop-metal, proto-punk, or proto-metal. Once Mickey learn the fine art of keeping all those influences in check, there’s no doubt they’ll be the stylish, Rock ‘N’ Roll animals of their album cover. Until that time, we’re left with a record that knows it wants to rock, but doesn’t always know when, where, or how. 6 out of 10 on The Rockometer.”

It seems that the hope shared by a number of people in the local garage rock scene—namely that Rock ‘n’ Roll Dreamer would catapult local scuzz-glam band Mickey into rock superstardom—have been dashed. As of this writing they aren’t causing any teenage riots in London or booking shows at the Budokan. I’m not sure where to place the blame, but it definitely doesn’t go to the album, which sounds every bit like something you’d hear blasted over an arena-size PA.

Mickey is the worst opening band you’re likely to encounter. Its live shows exhaust everything—blood, sweat, beer, spit—and leave the headliner performing in a pool of residue to a crowd that’s already seen what its paid for. The band is a discordant mix of libertines who only barely tie everything together through a mutual affection for chaos.

But the one thing Mickey does unanimously agree on, its musical output, is much more focused than its dialogues. Its debut LP for Hozac Records, Rock ’N’ Roll Dreamer, is an airtight assault on contemporary rock, fusing the now-divergent roles of glam’s theatrics and punk’s intensity. The group’s members say they’re already halfway done with their follow-up, but that’s assuming they don’t change their minds and scrap the whole collection for something better. The A.V. Club talked to Mickey’s members about the band’s process and its output before Mickey plays the Cobra Lounge on New Year’s Eve.

“2. Although touted by The Reader as Chicago’s best new band, opener Mickey was the worst. Guys: you were the opening act for a beloved and much anticipated all-girl group with a substantial lesbian following. This was not the right crowd for the played out posturing of using the mic stand as a giant phallus. It was obvious that the bespectacled, 5’2” girls in the front row were not there for you. You did not win me (or any other WF fan) over by spilling beer and blood on my head, or by jumping into the crowd, stepping on my toes and shoving me violently. In fact, you made me hate you. As a general rule, I have no problem with moshing, beer spilling, shoving, etc., in fact I think these things can add a lot to a concert experience. The key is that I want to be a voluntary participant in such antics for a band that I really like. Mickey, if I want your makeup or bodily fluids all over me, I will pay money to come to one of your shows. Did you notice that there were only two people who were really digging you? One of them was a fat 6’2” guy who tried to start a fist-fight with a girl; the other was the designer-drug girl who I finally had to punch because she wouldn’t stop tickling people. Not the right moment for slam dancing in the crowd, Mickey. Fail.”

Well… since MICKEY wasn’t able to play that show at Ultra Lounge, their interview got scrapped. Instead.. A.V Club wrote this article:

Mickey guitarist T.C. Starrchild hurt in car accident

T.C. Starrchild, guitarist and contributing songwriter for Chicago’s Mickey, was in an automobile accident last weekend. Starrchild’s in stable condition, but while the injuries are not believed to be life-threatening, they have left him incapable of performing in the near future.

The timing of the accident is unfortunate, as Mickey was scheduled to open for the Jacuzzi Boys at Ultra Lounge last night. The show would have been the group’s first in Chicago since Aug. 20. Lead singer Mac Blackout performed with his eponymous project in Mickey’s place.

Thankfully, Starrchild does have health insurance.
