MICKEY IS SICKEY

Mickey is the worst opening band you’re likely to encounter. Its live shows exhaust everything—blood, sweat, beer, spit—and leave the headliner performing in a pool of residue to a crowd that’s already seen what its paid for. The band is a discordant mix of libertines who only barely tie everything together through a mutual affection for chaos.

But the one thing Mickey does unanimously agree on, its musical output, is much more focused than its dialogues. Its debut LP for Hozac Records, Rock ’N’ Roll Dreamer, is an airtight assault on contemporary rock, fusing the now-divergent roles of glam’s theatrics and punk’s intensity. The group’s members say they’re already halfway done with their follow-up, but that’s assuming they don’t change their minds and scrap the whole collection for something better. The A.V. Club talked to Mickey’s members about the band’s process and its output before Mickey plays the Cobra Lounge on New Year’s Eve.

A.V. Club Article

Well… since MICKEY wasn’t able to play that show at Ultra Lounge, their interview got scrapped. Instead.. A.V Club wrote this article:

Mickey guitarist T.C. Starrchild hurt in car accident

T.C. Starrchild, guitarist and contributing songwriter for Chicago’s Mickey, was in an automobile accident last weekend. Starrchild’s in stable condition, but while the injuries are not believed to be life-threatening, they have left him incapable of performing in the near future.

The timing of the accident is unfortunate, as Mickey was scheduled to open for the Jacuzzi Boys at Ultra Lounge last night. The show would have been the group’s first in Chicago since Aug. 20. Lead singer Mac Blackout performed with his eponymous project in Mickey’s place.

Thankfully, Starrchild does have health insurance.

Ladies get your tampons ready because Chicago glam punks Mickey are back in action. If you missed Mickey’s opening set for Wild Flag this summer, let’s just say there were a few feminine missiles launched in the band members’ general direction by the middle of their set. All that aside, the men of Mickey wage an all-out assault on the crowd with their retro punk sound and sweet leather jackets and faces caked with pancake foundation and glitter. You don’t want to miss it. But you might want to stand toward the back.

OH HELLO!

MICKEY has been doing ABSOLUTELY NOTHING during the whole month of September. HOW BORING.

But now I have some news to share.

1. They are doing an interview with AV Club tomorrow (Thursday).

2. Some of MICKEY (T.C. Starrchild, Dirty D, X-mas) are doing a G.G. Allin Halloween cover band.

3. October 13th — it’s a Thursday — Show with Jacuzzi Boys and some other dumb band at Ultra Lounge (2169 Milwaukee Ave).

4. MICKEY has some new songs — though not enough to let you hear them. They’re being PRETTY LAME and not sharing any of their new stuff… for now. Sources say… as soon as they have enough songs (like 6/8/10 or something) then they’ll FINALLY start playing them at shows. GEEZ DUDES HURRY UP.

And that’s all of the news. I hope you haven’t forgotten about the boys. Life gets busy… I admit I sort of forgot about them a bit. So get ready for SOME MAJOR AWESOMENESS on 10/13. Woo!

Mickey- Rock ‘n’ Roll Dreamer
Release date: 2011Jun07
Label: Hozac Records
Rating: 3.5/5

Mickey hail from Chicago and their sound is similar to that of the New York Dolls, T.Rex, Dead Boys and other similar bands. “Dance” starts things off as an anthem that has a strong 1970s street punk feel to it. “Summer Night” is much the same as the lead singer does his best to imitate the swagger of David Johansen. Other highlights include “Rock and Roll Dreamer”, “Bright Lights”, “Kids Crazy In Love”, “Dream With Me” and “Baby We’re Gold”. This is a very fun record and one of the few vinyl reviews that I’ve done. It’s a great release if you like garage rock and early-mid 70s punk!

This review is funny because 1. the release date was May 27, 2011.. not June 7.. and 2. it’s filed under Punk/Ska. LOL

Favorite New Songs From the Past Year:
Cameron Omori: This band from Chicago, Mickey, made one of my favorite songs of the past couple months— “She’s So Crazy”.

Last Great Concert I Saw
Cullen: Mickey opened for us at Lincoln Hall [in Chicago], and it sounded amazing. They had, like, no time to soundcheck, and they just got on stage and sounded so good. I think Lincoln Hall is naturally really good-sounding.
